Real-world testing confirms Sony made switching the detachable disc drive between PS5 slim consoles a frustration-free process.
Last month, retail boxes for the smaller PS5 model revealed an internet connection is required before the console's detachable disc drive will work. That raised concerns regarding whether Sony had decided to permanently pair each drive to a console. Thankfully, that's not the case.
As the video above by TronicsFix confirms, registering the drive with a console only takes a couple of button presses and you can save yourself a restart or two by making sure your PS5 system software is up-to-date first. Moving the drive to another console requires no extra steps, the drive is simply registered with whichever console it's connected to.
There will ultimately come a time several years from now when Sony turns off the server that handles PS5 disc drive registration. By that point we'll no doubt have a PlayStation 6 console to talk about and purchase, but Sony may (hopefully) take the decision to remove the disc drive registration step completely by then.
